Customer Case Study 5
"Could you send us some high resolution images of the text overlay examples in your datasheet
We are considering developing a menu-based system using your text overlay core.
Thank you for your help"
- Customer based in Penang, MALAYSIA
This customer was interested in developing an interactive menu-based system for a Digital-TV
application. Their project schedule demanded a quick solution that was easy to implement and
small enough to fit in to a low-cost FPGA. We sent them some example images for them to look at.
Using a series of three text-overlay cores in series, we demonstrated a simple menu-based
system inserted over an RGB video source. The first text-overlay core generated the basic
menu structure. The second overlay generated the menu title bar and the last overlay
inserted a series of lines to delineate the menu entries. With additional alpha-blending
support the menu could be faded-in and faded-out of the display area.
The end result was a simple but effective text-based menu with the option to highlight
the various entries. Our customer was happy with the results and went on to develop a
more comprehensive multi-level menu-based system.
Conclusion
Our text overlay core is ideal for interactive menus, lists and tables. What's more, it
is totally versatile with fully customizable character sets and a simple programming
interface. Many text overlay cores may be connected in series to add extra colours and
detail for a more professional result.
